The Following Local Scholarships Are Available For Seniors In The Class Of 2008. Applications Are Available In The Counseling Office. THE JOSEPH MILLER SCHOLARSHIP - $1,000
The sole purpose of this fund shall be the awarding of scholarships for post-high school education or vocational training to a resident of the Township of Grosse Ile who may have financial need.  The fund was established to honor Joseph Miller, past fire chief and school board member.  The scholarship may be used for in-state or out-of-state, public or private school.  DEADLINE: APRIL 25, 2008

 

ROTARY “SERVICE ABOVE SELF” AWARD - $2,500
ELIGIBILITY: 
2007 Graduate of Grosse Ile High School. Student must show demonstration of voluntary contribution of time and energy toward the unselfish acts of helping others.  Examples can be of a personal nature (one-on-one) or as part of a group activity such as the blood drive, hospital service, senior citizen helper, church work, UNICEF, etc.  Service above self is the key phrase.

KIWANIS CLUB CITIZENSHIP SERVICE AWARD – 2 @ $500
Each year the Kiwanis Club of Grosse Ile selects and honors two graduating seniors for being involved and for participating in school activities. These students need to demonstrate citizenship to the community of Grosse Ile. DEADLINE: APRIL 25, 2008

 

LIGGETT TRUST AWARD – 3 @ $1,000
The Liggett Award results from a request made by Louis G. Liggett to the Trenton and Grosse Ile School districts.  Mr. Liggett established a trust fund that is to be used to provide financial aid for students who have a need.  Applicants will be judged on financial need, sincerity of purpose in continuing their education and demonstrated service to school and/or community. THE MEMORIAL ART SCHOLARSHIP IN MEMORY OF NICOLE CRYDERMAN-MOHAMMED, BRAD MOHAMMED AND KEVIN MOHAMMED ($1,500)   DEADLINE: APRIL 25, 2008

1)     Letter of recommendation from  a teacher or adult community member

2)     Sample of art work

3)     Letter of application indicating need and future art training plans

 
GROSSE ILE SOCCER ASSOCIATION – 2 @ $500 - 1 male, 1 female
GISA will award two awards to a male and female student/athlete who participated in the GISA program as a youth and participated in Soccer at the Varsity level at Grosse Ile High School. All applicants must write an essay explaining the impact that participating in soccer had on their academic career.

GIYRA SCHOLARSHIP (GROSSE ILE YOUTH RECREATION ASSOCIATION)  (3 @ $500)

GROSSE ILE HIGH SCHOOL THESPIAN SCHOLARSHIP – 1 @ $600
Applicants must be a member of troop 2860 and have demonstrated commitment and dedication to excellence in the theatre.  No application is needed.  See Mr. Steve Kiersey with any questions. DEADLINE: APRIL 25, 2008

 

STEVE SIMS LEADERSHIP AWARD – 1 @ $2,000
The Steve Sims Leadership Award will be awarded to a senior girl who has participated in Basketball and/or Track and Field and who has demonstrated the outstanding leadership qualities that were valued by Steve Sims. Applicants must plan on attending college, have earned a Varsity letter in Girl’s Track & Field and/or Girl’s Basketball, complete all paperwork associated with the application, demonstrate competitive spirit, sense of fairness, humility, integrity, love of life, sense of humor, giving spirit, and the ability to motivate. DEADLINE: APRIL 25, 2008

 

THE GROSSE ILE EDUCATION ASSOCIATION (G.I.E.A.) – 1 @ $1,000
The G.I.E.A. wishes to award $1,000 to a graduating senior who wants to further his/her education.  The money will be awarded when the committee receives a receipt of registration or show of enrollment at a college or university.  DEADLINE: APRIL 25, 2008

 

DR. HUNTER AND LUPINI HEALTH SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP AWARD - $1,000
BY NOMINATION.
  Nominee must demonstrate ability and interest in health sciences.

 

GROSSE ILE ROWING SCHOLARSHIP - 2 @ $250
BY NOMINATION
. A scholarship will be awarded to one male and one female graduating senior who were active in Grosse Ile High School rowing.

 

THE BARBARA J. BLANTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – 1 @ $500
Applicant must be a graduating Grosse Ile High School senior who has been accepted at an accredited institution for post secondary education who plans a career in performing arts, computer science or education. DEADLINE: APRIL 25, 2008

 

EDUCATION FIRST CREDIT UNION – 1 @ $500
Qualifications:  Student must have an open savings account in good standing at the credit union with a minimum balance of $5.00; have a G.P.A. of 3.0 or better; must be a 2008 June graduate of your school; provide letter of acceptance from post-secondary educational institution; provide two recommendation letters – one from a high school instructor and one from an extra-curricular source; provide a personal goal summary (not to exceed one typed page).

  

THE MILDRED AND LAWRENCE SAWITZKY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP- Minimum $1,000

MARJORIE AND DONALD TREADWELL SCHOLARSHIP (1@$1,000)
Must be a graduating senior with a minimum GPA of 3.5, who shows extra-curricular and community involvement. You must write an essay explaining why you are deserving of the scholarship and how you will use the money. DEADLINE: APRIL 25, 2008

 

GROSSE ILE  MUSIC BOOSTERS’ – JOHN BISHOP INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP – 1 @ $1,000
Applicant must submit a letter of interest.  Criteria: student’s participation in the Instrumental music program, attitude, performance and financial need; student must be enrolled in a music class during their senior year.  DEADLINE: APRIL 25, 2008 TO MR. NATE BEARINGER

 

GROSSE ILE MUSIC BOOSTERS VOCAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP – 1 @ $1,000
Applicants must participate in the High School’s Vocal Music program and show achievement in Vocal Music and provide a resume describing what they have done in school and outside of school in regards to Vocal Music, school and community activities they are involved in, what they will do with the scholarship, and why they deserve to receive this award.  Financial need may be taken into consideration.  DEADLINE: APRIL 25, 2008 TO MS. COLLEEN CURRAN

DR. JAMES PARKER VOCAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP – 1 @ $1,000
Applicants must be a Grosse Ile High School current or past graduate who is enrolled or plans to enroll in a college program with the intent of becoming a vocal music teacher.  Financial need is a factor. 

 

THE CHRISTOPHER PALAZZOLA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – 1 @ $1,200
Students who have actively participated in athletics and music. Winner is determined by teacher and coach nomination.

 

THOMAS E. GUNNELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES – 1 @ $1000
This $1,000 scholarship was established in 2007 to honor a student who demonstrates a strong interest in the biological sciences.  Student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0; plan on attending a community college or university; has chosen a career in the Biological Sciences (Biology, Science Education, Pre-Vet, Pre-Med, Pre-Dental, Zoology); a signature endorsement from a Grosse Ile School Science teacher; and applicants must submit a typed essay describing why they are deserving of this scholarship. CLEMENT CHANG MEMORIAL AWARD – 1 @ $250
Applicant must have participated in Grosse Ile athletics; made a significant contribution to the improvement of school community; demonstrated service and good citizenship

 

MILDRED SAWITZKY – 1 @ $500
Applicant must be admitted to a four year Michigan college or university.

 

 THE FREDERICK D. ROBERTSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – 1 @ $500
Applicant does not have to be a top student; must be admitted to a four year university or college; demonstrate leadership and made a significant contribution to school and community. Financial need is a factor.

 

THE EDWARD MAYNE SCHOLARSHIP HONORING THE CLASS OF 1938 – Minimum 2 @ $1,000
Applicant must plan to attend a four year Michigan college of university; does not have to be a top student but have qualities of honesty, leadership, loyalty, integrity, imagination and consideration. Financial need is a factor.

 GROSSE ILE HERB SOCIETY (2 @ $1,000 – 1 MALE, 1 FEMALE)
Graduating senior who will be attending college, must be active in community service and show financial need.

MILDRED A. SABO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (1@ $900)
Graduating female attending a four year college. Factors considered are academic ability, strong character, work ethic and financial need.


BERNIE WHALEY MEMORIAL TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP FOR FUTURE TEACHERS (1@$500)
Graduating senior who will be attending college in the Fall of 2007 and will be majoring in Education.

 

THE FOLLOWING THREE ATHLETIC AWARDS ARE BASED ON NOMINATIONS BY HEAD COACHES AND/OR THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

 

JAY TISSOT ATHLETIC AWARD – 2 @ $500 AWARDS: 1 MALE, 1 FEMALE
Nominated by head coaches of male and female varsity teams and the Athletic Director. Recipient must exemplify the qualities of achievement, commitment, sportsmanship and leadership, both academically and athletically.

 

RON SOLACK ATHLETIC AWARD – 2 @ $500 AWARDS: 1 MALE, 1 FEMALE
Nominated by the Athletic Director and is based on point totals of participation in varsity sports.
