What are crab races? By Dena Dardzinski
In the next few weeks, you will be hearing about an exciting new event that is going to help support our new Elementary Spanish program, which will begin in the fall. In conjunction with Islandfest, the GITS will be hosting a fund-raising event that should be fun for everyone. We will be holding hermit crab races at Islandfest (May 30 and 31 and June1) with all proceeds going to add Spanish language instruction in grades three to five at BOTH elementary schools. The addition of Spanish at these younger grades will be complementary to the middle school and high school language programs. The intention behind the island crab races was to plan an event that would be enjoyable and in which children could participate. The CRAB (Crab Race Advisory Board) will purchase crabs for contestants to buy. Prizes will be awarded to those crab owners who are victorious and outlast the other crabby participants. Interested individuals, groups and businesses can sponsor a race. The CRAB will be sending out special invitations to explain how you can be involved with this important support project for elementary Spanish. Ole! As the school year is winding down, we are still hard at work. The next few weeks are packed with events that celebrate the accomplishments of our students. There are so many special activities you will not want to miss; the school musical “The Little Shop of Horrors” will be performed May 1 to 3, just to name one.
