Class Information

Mythology:

This year we will be focusing on the Edith Hamilton text Mythology, which is considered a solid foundation in comprehensive Greek and Roman Mythology. We will seek to understand the classical text in order to see contemporary connections to literature and art. The function of this class is to make Mythology come to life through organic authentic small group and individual activities and assessments.

            Required Materials: Blue/Black pen, 1 or 1 ½ inch three ring binder, paper, text book.

Journalism I: This is an introductory course to news writing and layout design. Journalism I is split into two halves. 

News writing and reporting: Ten weeks will be spent learning how to write each of the five types of news writing (news, sports, feature, column, and editorial). Also, students will learn important research and interviewing skills in order to become effective journalists.

Newspaper production: Ten weeks will be spent learning how to create, produce, and maintain a relevant news paper. Students will gain useful experience in photojournalism where they will create a photo portfolio. Also, students will learn how to create user friendly exciting news paper layouts.

Journalism II: This course focuses on producing the school newspaper the Islander. Skills learned in Journalism I will be reinforced and built upon. Students will have the opportunity to fill staff positions while having large creative control over the Islander's look and layout.

Lit Comp 9:

This course will cover classic reading selections for the contemporary freshmen. We will focus on vocabulary, grammar, writing, and reading. These topics will be examined through the lens of small group and individual activities both inside and outside of class. Success in this class will depend on the participation and communication of the teacher, parents, and students.
